Pioneers swept by Columbia

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — The Volunteer State Community College Pioneers have been swept at home (0-3) against Columbia State Community College. After this series, the Pioneers are now (2-7) at home to begin the 2019 season playing 17 games thus far. Box scores from the series are posted here.

Game one on March 10 Corey Wilson started and pitched the opening game of the for the series. He pitched for eight innings totaling nine hits, four runs allowed, and six strikeouts. Colin Kriminger relieved Wilson in the ninth inning to close out the game and totaled two strikeouts.

Game two saw two home runs, one from each team to make the outing interesting. Daniel Freeman from Columbia State homered in the top of the sixth scoring three runs to put the Chargers up 3-1 late in the game.

Judd Sparks for the Pioneers in the seventh inning hit the second homer of the game for his second home run on the season. Hitting the home run was not enough to come back this game as the Pioneers would fall 3-2 in seven innings.

Game three Brett Wilkins was the starting pitcher on the mound and pitched for four innings totaling five hits on four runs scored. Reed Johnson came in for a short time but allowed three hits and two runs. Preston Burnett came in to close the game pitching three innings totaling five strikeouts in the 6-4 loss to the Chargers.

"We have a losing record but most of the games have been one-run games. We aren't all down on ourselves but we still have room to improve and we know that. We need to come together and play more as a team," said Bill Hamilton following the series against Columbia.

Motlow State Community College will visit for a non-conference game tomorrow afternoon and will begin at 4 p.m. Then the Pioneers will host Dyersburg State Community College this weekend starting on Friday at 2 p.m. for the third conference series of the season.

"We are going to be ready," said Hamilton at the end of the interview in regard to playing the next conference series this weekend against Dyersburg.
