Pioneers lose to Vincennes University

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — For the Volunteer State Community College Pioneers last away game this month the team traveled to Vincennes University Nov. 6.  The result of the game was in Vincennes favor 98-38.  Head coach Rusty Melvin said that they played in front of a crowd of 1,000 people.  For the next six games, the Pioneers will have home court advantage. Two conference matches against Columbia State and Jackson State will be of importance for the now 1-2 team.

"We played in a league that we don't belong.  I scheduled this game so we can play the best teams in the country.  They see now what it takes to play at the next level," said Melvin.

With the win, Vincennes is continuing on a three-game winning streak.  Last game out for the winning team they played a conference opponent for Vol State which was Columbia State Community College.

"If you don't play the best teams then your kids don't get any exposure.  In two years if they want to go somewhere they know what they'll need to do to get better.  We need to be tougher. You can't let them bump you and you fall down then look up and say I got fouled," said Melvin.

Out of the starting five for Vol State, the 22 points came from George Stanberry (20) and Kevin Rimmer (2).

The top scorer of the game was Cardell McGee for Vincennes who finished with 15 on the night.

Stanberry shot 6-10 from the three-point line but for the team, this time out the six-game home stand should be of some importance now that conference games are looming.

Next game for the Pioneers is Saturday 4 p.m. against Wallace State Community College in the Pickel Field House.
