Pioneers Fall Short of a Victory

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — For a beginning to a season, the Volunteer State Community College Pioneers (2-6) have played well and as far as the record shows all that matters is the conference games.

Last night, a visiting team in Snead State Community College came in to only win with a two-point lead (76-74).  George Stanberry had a last-second opportunity to score and was fouled on the way up to the basket but the call was missed.  With less than five seconds to go all the Pioneers needed was a basket to tie the game.

"I didn't want to do anything stupid that's all.  We just have to learn from this game and move on to the next one," said Stanberry.

"Playing teams like this brings us more together as a team.  Everyone is getting better and all we need is a good passing game to be a better team," said Devlin Chapman.

Ending the night on a good scoring note, Stanberry finished his game with 38 points.  Not translating out to what could have been Stanberry did speak on being confident for the next game on Nov. 28.

Behind All-American player, Stanberry, was Tim Goodrich with 18 points.  Throughout the night, he drove the basket relentlessly against a team that had more size.  Knocking down two rebounds on a team with more size was a good feat to accomplish against a team as big as Snead State was.

"To me, I feel pretty confident in playing the conference games.  We shouldn't lose too many games in the conference.  My expectations are high and we'll see what we can do," said Stanberry.

"One thing we can capitalize on is getting to know each other better.  I need to work more with a guy like Chapman because he's more of a leaping ability guy and I am not as used to having that kind of a caliber type player right beside me," said Stanberry.

"That team was not as strong as we were; they were just taller that's all.  We need to be in the weight room as a team and bond more as well.  Chemistry will come up after we spend more time together," said Chapman.

The conference record sits at 1-1 to start the year after splitting two games this past weekend at home.  The last game of a six-game home stand will be played next Wednesday against Elizabethtown College.
