Lady Pioneers Win Back-to-Back Conference Games

Lady Pioneers Win Back-to-Back Conference Games

By: Nick Kieser

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — The Motlow State Community College Lady Bucks (13-9) who have lost five straight visited the Volunteer State Community College Lady Pioneers (8-8) over the weekend on Saturday (Jan. 26).

The Pioneers won the game 72-64.  After the weekend was all said and done, the Bucks added one more loss to the four they already had.  This is the first consecutive win streak since November 19 when the Lady Pioneers defeated Snead State 66-61.

"I thought we weathered our storm as the other team made a strong push in the second half and we began to apply our own push.  We maintained our poise which is huge for us and once more I thought the freshmen stepped up and played well," said head coach Otis Key about the win against Motlow.

Racking up points went well for the Lady Pioneers as the starters dropped 54 points and the bench contributed with 18 points.  Aliyah Miller led the team in scoring dropping 18 points and behind her was Shalaya Armstead netting 14 against the Bucks.

"I don't think this team has peaked yet.  We're a month away from the tournament and we're starting to form around the way I want this team to be playing.  Once we peak we will be a scary team," said Coach Key.

Next, up on the schedule, the Lady Pioneers will host Chattanooga State Community College (12-6), who have won two straight, on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and then Cleveland State Community College (5-12) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

"Four teams are tied for third and then you have us and Chattanooga who are tied for fourth.  All of these teams play each other this weekend and it'll shake-out by Monday so it is huge that we focus this weekend and get on the court ready to learn and execute to get these wins," said Coach Key on what the stakes are right now.

Four of the next seven are at home for the Pioneers and these games will continue to be all the more vital as the conference tournament nears.
