Pioneers Swept in Consecutive Weekends

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — Tough break for the Volunteer State Community College Lady Pioneers (8-12) as Walters State and Roane State swept the Pioneers. The losses make it four in a row for the Pioneers.

Starting the trip on Friday (Feb.9) Walters State dropped 69 points on the night and the Pioneers totaled 37. At halftime, the Pioneers were down 20-3.  The next half found the Senators outscoring the Pioneers 38-17 to win the game. Xavia Williams dropped 11 points as the highest point getter that game.

On the second half of the road trip, the Pioneers traveled down to Roane State to tip-off against the Raiders. In a tighter scoring game, the Raiders walked away with the home win 57-54. Three players from the Raiders tied for 10 points and Shalaya Armstead dropped 12 for the Pioneers in the fourth loss in a row.

As far as foul shooting went the Pioneers went 12-19 in the game. A key to the loss as well is that no three-point shots were made by the Pioneers. A tough point that head coach Otis Key made after the weekend was, "We need to make our shots. It's hard when we don't score at all for eight minutes," he said.

Three games remain on the Lady Pioneer schedule. Two will be at home and one on the road. Currently sitting in eighth place puts the Pioneers in position for the Play-in game for the postseason. Coach Key noted he would like to avoid doing that.
